A young veterinarian may never care for animals again after she injected herself and her friends with the horse tranquilliser ketamine during a weekend bender.
Catherine McGuigan was fined $1000 and struck off the Register of Veterinary Surgeons in Western Australia after being found guilty of unprofessional conduct.
The State Administrative Tribunal heard the respected vet administered drugs to humans she was only permitted to give to animals.
Ms McGuigan worked at Murray Veterinary Services in Coolup for many years, with photos of the vet posted to the clinic’s Facebook page dating back to 2015.
The animal doctor struck up not only a professional but personal relationship with an anonymous couple that would see the vet put her entire career on the line.
The group were heard to have ‘socialised regularly and from time to time, took trips away together during which they used illicit drugs including ecstasy and cocaine for recreational purposes’.
The tribunal heard Ms Mcguigan retrieved a 100ml bottle of ketamine from her car during a night of partying at a Wannanup rental.
She asked her female friend how much she weighed in order to work out the correct dosage before injecting her, a male friend and herself.
